Salsomaggiore Terme, Festival Beat vol.23

(RnB-RnR-MerseyBeat Heroes)
I Beat Barons?
The Beat Barons? A guarantee. This Anglo-Milanese combo will launch the 2015 edition of the Festival with their tried-and-tested show based on the old-style Merseybeat sound. So put on your Beatle boots and take a leap back into early-sixties England: the Beatles, the Shadows, simple but catchy melodies, and an uncontrollable desire to dance. Surely the perfect way to launch the Salsomaggiore event.

MAD BEATLE BOOTS Race

-BAD LOVE EXPERIENCE(IT)
Brit moods, a fresh beat sound, and songs rich in influences that take us back to a sonic universe rooted in 1967, before bringing us up to the present day: Bad Love Experience are living proof that the sixties-sound can keep up with the times, and can be appreciated even by those who were not raised on a basic diet of the Sonics. Let’s give them our full attention, because they warrant it.

-LAST KILLERS(IT)
special guest Antonio SORGENTONE on Piano
We’re well-acquainted with the Last Killers: high voltage rock that combines the Stones, the Sonics and the MC5, as anyone who saw them at last year’s edition of the Festival can testify. Joining them as a special guest this year will be Antonio Sorgentone, the celebrated Italian 50s rock’n’roll/boogie woogie pianist, in what promises to be a an explosive double act. This is going to be some show!

DEECRAKS(Au)
Just to add some spice and distortion to the Festival, how about a healthy dose of frantic pop-punk? That’s what we can expect from the DeeCracks, an Austrian band that is a genuine authority within the genre. With the Ramones in their hearts, they play at near-hardcore speed, and just love to make a racket. The Festival Beat proves for the umpteenth time that it really can satisfy all tastes.

URBAN JUNIOR(CH)
Urban Junior is concrete proof that Switzerland is more than just the country that gave us chocolate and the cuckoo clock: a savage, lo-fi one man band who will do everything possible to hurt your eardrums with his trimmed down garage-blues… and he’s got a pretty fine chance of succeeding! If you prefer clean sounds and solos that last for half an hour, then stay well clear. If, on the other hand, you love the rawest form of rock’n’roll then you won’t be disappointed.
start 10.00pm
The more extreme sixties maniacs will be contented once again this year: bob hairstyles, Don Craine-style caps, guitars worn high on their chests, maracas, tambourines and savage vocals: the Grys-Grys, from France, look like something out of a 1966 photo. They play a fiery mixture of beat and R&B that evokes the Pretty Things and the Count Five, and they’re proud to be a total anachronism: what better stage could there be for this band, than the Festival Beat?
start 11.00pm
THE MONSTERS(CH)
Reverend Beat-Man doesn’t just set out to create havoc when he’s on his own. He’s also one of the pillars of the Monsters, a brutal garage band that combines sixties punk e rockabilly with a whole lot of oomph and just the right amount of humour. Raw sounds, a minimalist attitude, and a great desire to come clean off the rails, entertaining others while enjoying themselves: there’s every good chance that this is going to happen, and the Festival Beat audience is ready to play its part.
start 12.00
RADIO BIRDMAN(AUS)
Rock history stops off at Salsomaggiore. It seemed like utopia, but it’s reality… and what reality it is: Rob Younger, Deniz Tek and company will ignite the proceedings on Friday 3rd July. Yes, you heard me correctly: I’m talking about Radio Birdman. Detroit-sound, sixties-rock and punk: the explosive mixture that immortalised albums such as Radios Appear will have the festival sky echoing with classics like What Gives?, Do The Pop and Murder City Nights. And don’t worry if purists of the sixties sound turn their noses up; after a couple of songs, they’ll be the first to surrender to the evidence. The band deserves a great deal of the credit for the fact that ‘70s garage rock was able to survive the dual-edged attack of the Bee Gees and Boston. So long live Radio Birdman. Their appearance means another trophy on the mantelpiece for the Festival Beat. And it’s one of the most impressive of the lot.

SULTAN BATHERY(IT)
Take the Elevators, the Black Lips and the acid garage of the Laughing Soup Dish, mix it all up, and you get the sound of a young band called Sultan Bathery. These lads know how to blend diverse influences while maintaining psychedelia as their main focal point: sometimes overstated, sometimes harsher and more explosive… but always high in quality. Keep an eye on them: a lot of people are going to be pleasantly surprised.

DEAD ELVIS(NL)
Elvis has risen again, this time in Holland… and he’s once more spreading the word. To do so, he’s opted for the one-man band formula: an electric guitar, a trimmed-down drumkit, a cheap microphone, and a mask of “The King”. Ladies and gentlemen: Dead Elvis, pure trash-rock’n’roll that hits you right in the stomach. No flash, but plenty of substance: a healthy return to the roots.
start 10pm
RAY DAYTONA and the GOO GOO BOMBOOS(IT)
Something of a cult band in Italy, Ray Daytona and his Googoobombos are returning to the Festival a full fifteen years after their debut performance. They still have the enthusiasm of the early days, but they can now point to a certain maturity acquired after twenty years of gigging up and down the country. Still maintaining their solid surf background, they have now added a slightly punky garage element that combines craft with talent: welcome back!
start 11.00pm
LISA and the LIPS(USA)
Lisa Kekaula and Bob Vennum already paid a visit to the Festival Beat with their previous creation, the BellRays. They’re back at Salsomaggiore with their new band, together with the incendiary drive that they have always displayed. Lisa And The Lips mix soul and garage rock as if there was no tomorrow, with Detroit in their hearts. Dripping lava, rock and black music that shakes the bowels: an erupting volcano. Those of you with weak hearts should keep your distance.

THE FLESHTONES(USA)
Vietato stare fermi!
What is there left to say? A true legend. From their early stirrings at CBGB’s, in the company of folks like the Ramones and the Cramps, right up to the present day, Peter Zaremba, Keith Streng and co. have written the history of garage rock in the shape of memorable records and no-holds-barred gigs. The Fleshtones were harkening back to the sixties long before it became fashionable. Just one reason why it is an honour to finally have them as our guests on the Festival Beat stage. Let’s give this band the ovation that they deserve: an honorary Oscar for these New Yorkers who will always remain teenagers. They’ll be responsible for the Festival’s “Saturday night fever” moment. Don’t even think of standing still!

-COCO and the LIGHTERS(IT)
From mid-sixties R&B to end-of-the-decade psychedelia: this brand new outfit from Emilia offer all this and a whole lot more besides. No doubt they’ll soon have everyone talking. Sure, they’re young, but they already pack a fair punch, and they have all the enthusiasm necessary to fly the garage rock flag with pride. Make a note of the name, and be sure not to miss their show.

-I FENOMENI(IT)
Italy’s leading beat group hails from Genoa: the Fenomeni. Their sound is both retro and refined. Just to give you an idea, they take us back to Italy in 1968/69: the later beat era with just a hint of psychedelia and early prog rock; aimed at connoisseurs and those searching for a little more than just the impact of sixties music. The band is led by Matteo Bocci, who appeared with the Croakers at the first edition of the Festival back in 1993. Now that’s what you call “endless passion”…
